History

Kitchee sport, set up in 1931, is one of the oldest clubs in Hong Kong. Our establishment has been serving the community for more than half a century.

Our founding period, between 1928 and 1930, was when Hong Kong was a group of football-loving people.

Our name, Kitchee tries to capture that team members are from the grassroots of society, they aren’t always from wealthy or high level economic statuses. There was always the desire to establish a genuine sports club however the significant costs associated with facilities and administration meant that, in 1931 this was not possible.

In 1939 the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong took place during the Pacific War and Hong Kong experienced 3 years of dark times in which time Kitchee Sports was not immune and was forced to stop business. Even worse than that though, our administrative offices in Wan Chai which were holding together the core of Kitchee were hit by a Japanese bomb and all of the stored literature went up in smoke!

After the Japanese left Hong Kong in 1945, the HK government saw the opportunity to revive the football scene here. Efforts went into reorganizing the Chinese Amateur Sports Association, Hong Kong Chinese Football Association and launching the Hong Kong Chinese Football Referees Council.

All these trials and tribulations have only served to make the Kitchee spirit stronger and stronger and we believe we have a glorious period ahead of us.
