Returning to their stronghold at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground—where they boasted an impressive record of 7 wins and 1 draw last season—the Blues sought to establish early dominance. Kitchee immediately took control of the tempo, with Jay Haddow and Ruslan Mingazov orchestrating dangerous offensive combinations down the right flank.
The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute from a set-piece. Following a free-kick delivered into the penalty area by Kendy, Asier Illarramendi controlled the ball and unleashed a shot. The initial effort took a heavy deflection off a defender, allowing Marcos Santos to react quickest and poke home the rebound from close range, giving Kitchee a 1-0 lead.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Kitchee doubled their advantage through a lethal counter-attack.
